Waxing Care Instructions:
Before your Hair removal….
So you’ve booked a wax. Here’s a couple of tips to lessen the pain (and increase the longevity of the hair free feeling).
- Make sure your hair is long enough to remove completely from the roots – it should be at least a quarter of an inch (0.25 inches, or roughly 2 weeks of growth post shaving, 4-6 weeks post wax treatment) If you’ve shaved the area within the last few weeks it might take a couple of waxes to get your hair into a cycle of growth that allows the most effective wax finish.
- Avoid drinking alcohol and/or caffeinated drinks a few hours before hair removal.
- Moisturize the day before and the day of waxing
You’ve just invested time, money and a little discomfort in order to be hair-free – so make sure to take the best care of your skin after your session!
Immediately after your hair removal
It’s normal immediately after hair removal for a little bit of redness and/or a bumpy rash to appear. Do not fret! This should disappear after a few hours and is normally due to a histamine reaction.
Because waxing removes the hair at the root, it is important that you keep the area clean and bacteria free. This means:
- No sunbathing for at least 12 hours (have your waxing done at least the day BEFORE you go on holiday)
- No swimming in a chlorinated pool, baths and saunas for 24 hours (shower is OK)
- Do not exercise or other activities that cause heavy perspiring
- Avoid perfume soaps or products with chemical irritants and make up for 12 hours.
- Do not apply any of your own creams or lotions for 24 hours. We only recommend the Post Wax Soothing Cream and the Jasmine Oil from Tuel.
- Do not expose your skin to exfoliating products including, but not limited to, glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid as well as ultraviolet rays (sun or tanning booth) for at least 48 hours after hair removal service.
- Do not squeeze any pimples! (These are actually ingrown hairs, you will only spread the infection. See below for info on how to avoid ingrown hairs)
- Also avoid touching the waxed area to ensure it remains bacteria free.
- Avoid using bar soaps, it leave a film on the body that can cause ingrown hairs
For Bikini/Brazilian hair removal, along with all of the above.
- Avoid any sexual contact for at least 12 hours.
- We suggest bringing a fresh pair of cotton underwear to change into after your appointment. (Post-wax, your pores are exposed and more prone to infection. A clean pair of underwear will help keep germs away)
- Avoid tight fitting clothing.
3 days after hair removal and beyond……
As you skin closes over the follicles, the next consideration is to ensure you prevent ingrown hairs. This is when new, often softer hair can get trapped under the skin. A few simple measures can easily avoid this situation. Here’s where the “dos” come in:
- Use a soft brush or exfoliating glove to gently buff the area every 2-3 days – this is particularly important after about day 3 through to about the 10 day mark. It doesn’t need to be hard scrubbing, just a gentle exfoliation.
- NOTE: make sure to keep your exfoliating tool in a clean dry spot after use so bacteria does notgrow. Salus offers exfoliating gloves, dry brushes, and an exfoliating glycolic wash, Green Clean, to use 1-2 times a week to maintain healthy skin.
- Be careful not to OVER exfoliate. This can exasperate the problem. We only suggest 1-3 times per week or every 2-3 days depending on your skin type and sensitivity. Start low and increase if need be. Do not exfoliate more than 3 times per week. This includes using topical exfoliants like Green Clean and PowerPeel
- If you are prone to break outs after wax, here are some tips!
o Use 4-5 pumps of the Green Clean in your bath water. Soak the areas 15-20 mins and then lightly exfoliate the areas.
o Power Peel to the rescue. Power peel is a topical, leave-on Glycolic serum. Best to use at night. Use 1-2 pumps, apply on clean skin, and leave on overnight. It’s gentle, yet effective and wont stain/bleach your clothing or sheets!
o Spot treat with Clean It! This product is multitalented. It helps with zits/acne, wax break outs, and soothes bug bites! It can be used every day until the pimple is gone. - Make sure to hydrate your skin/hair every day. Properly hydrated skin and hair will provide better results in future appointments due to less breakage from dry, brittle hair. The Body Oils from Farm House Fresh are our go to for great skin hydration.
The added bonus of following the aftercare advice (apart from your skin looking hair-free and smooth for longer), is that it really will make your next hair removal a whole lot quicker and less painful!!!
We recommend being on a regular hair removal routine. When you reach 4-6 weeks or a minimum of ¼ – ½ an inch of hair growth, it is time to schedule your next appointment. When you continually remove a hair from its blood supply, you “damage” the follicle, really what this means is the follicle could stop producing a hair in general! Scheduling regular treatments can lead to potential permanent reduction in hair growth!
